The DVD features extremely rare performance footage from 1939 to 1970 of Rich with the bands of Artie Shaw, Harry James and Tommy Dorsey, as a leader of his own small groups and big bands, and in a unique drum duel with Gene Krupa. Buddy Rich produced his largest and most impressive body of work as a leader of his own big band from 1970 until his death in 1987. Charlie Parker - Improvisation
In 1944, Norman Granz and Gjon Mili collaborated on a film about jazz music called "Jammin' the Blues". In 1950 they collaborated again on a film about jazz improvisation that was never completed ("Jazz at The Philharmonic"). This footage has now been combined with other film of jazz improvisation shot by Granz at different times and locations to create this new film. Included is material by Mili in 1950, Duke Ellington at the Cote D'Azur, Count Basie at Montreux Jazz Festival in 1977, Joe Pass in 1979, Ella Fitzgerald in 1979, and Oscar Peterson with Dizzy Gillespie, Clark Terry, and Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis at Montreux in 1977.

This DVD, Buddy Rich Up Close, is a special edit of The Buddy Rich Show. It spotlights six songs, with as many cameras as possible focusing on Buddy and his incredible drumming technique. Included are the show's main edit, plus three different versions of audio (drums hot and band hot), as well as a slow motion version.
